The California Horse Racing Board issued  the following directive July 8 to associations, clockers, owners, and trainers organizations from Scott Chaney, the regulator’s executive director:

Metabolomics is an emerging field in doping control and represents a novel testing approach that identifies cellular effects unique to a class of drugs rather than identifying the specific molecule responsible for those effects. 

Actuator’s 7 1/4-length maiden victory June 8 at Churchill Downs off an eight-month layoff was a “wow” performance, made more jaw-dropping by Actuator’s original purchase price: $2,200 by Gavin O’Connor and his partners.

Pa. stewards fined owner/trainer Juan C. Vazquez $5,000 and suspended him for more than 2 1/2 years in a ruling stating he was “grossly negligent, cruel, and abusive” in shipping a horse between racetracks that was euthanized due to laminitis.

Ellis Park has announced three new team members for their historic 100-year race meet: Vince Gabbert as interim director of racing, Megan Devine as paddock analyst and simulcast host, and Allie Sclafani as race marketing coordinator.

Riley Mott, son of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who has served as his father’s assistant trainer, plans to go out on his own. The younger Mott, who has a training license in Florida, hopes to begin running horses in his name this fall.

In response to suggestions made at a recent meeting, stakeholders have retooled an online Injury Reporting Form designed to provide the Maryland Racing Commission and Maryland Jockey Club with the goal of rapidly responding to track issues.

The Eric Reed trainee will work again at Mercury Equine Center before heading to Churchill Downs. He will get back to his usual nine-to-10-day gap between works and will head to Saratoga Race Course after a few drills beneath the Twin Spires.
