Trainer Ashlee Brnjas, who primarily raced at Woodbine and Fort Erie in Ontario, has died at the age of 40.

Nest, a half sister to grade 1 winner Idol, aced her debut, while Bhoma, a half sister to graded stakes winner Mom’s On Strike, and Speightsville, a half brother to grade 1 winner Shotgun Gulch, won second time out.

Pimlico Race Course will once again play host to the popular Canter for a Cause Sunday, Oct. 10, giving the public an opportunity to walk, trot, canter or gallop on the track to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Jockey Edgard Zayas and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. successfully defended their Gulfstream Park spring/summer meet titles this year.

The seven-time grade 1 winner and multiple champion will be bred next year to Spendthrift’s leading sire Into Mischief.

Four stakes for 2-year-olds, including a pair of graded races, highlight the upcoming Winter Thoroughbred meet at Los Alamitos Race Course. The season is scheduled to begin Friday, Dec. 3 and continue through Sunday, Dec. 12.

Top 3-year-old St Mark’s Basilica, who beat Arc (G1) favorite Tarnawa in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1) this month, has been retired to stud with trainer Aidan O’Brien describing him as possibly the best horse he’s ever had at Ballydoyle.
